I build a model based on the miniature No 160 of the “Cantigas de Santa Maria” of Alfonso X the Wise. It has 2 melody strings and 2 drones, but one of them can be replaced by a "trompette" string which, while not a historical feature (the "chien" bridge was added to the hurdy-gurdy during the fifteenth century), considerably increases the options of the instrument. This, plus the 2 octaves chromatic keyboard , makes it an instrument with a versatility that surpasses the requirements of medieval music.
